ACT: What exactly is a Theatre Consultant?

ACT: What exactly is a Theatre Consultant?

A question we are asked all the time. So here is Cathleen Bachman, our head of Planning and Room Design with a brief overview. We believe in providing knowledge-based design through real world experience, and provide a range of core services to support that objective. Take a listen.

With the planning stages of the Arts Commons Transformation (ACT) project underway, a number of specialty consultants are strategically being brought onto the project team. Each one of them has a very specific and specialized role to play. On February 4, 2021, Arts Commons and CMLC announced the selection of the first two members of the project team: Colliers International (Calgary) will help guide project management, and Fisher Dachs Associates (New York), whose extensive expertise as specialized theatre consultants, will bring the facility’s artistic vision to life.

But what does that mean? What exactly does a theatre consultant do?

As one of the world's leading theatre consultants, Fisher Dachs Associates (FDA) will be planning and designing all the performance, audience, and support spaces to deliver a truly modern and fully customized facility. The work is both detailed and fascinating. Watch the video above to learn more about the exiting work that FDA does.

Upcoming Public Event – Placemakers
Calgarians will also have a chance to learn firsthand about all the complex layers of detail and specialization required to develop a project like ACT at the upcoming Placemakers series event, hosted by CMLC, on May 19, 2021. Designing Cultural Spaces in a Post-Pandemic World will be a free, public event that will provide insight on the project from the experts involved and provide the public with the opportunity to ask questions. As panelists and presenters, the event will feature:

· Alex Sarian – President and CEO, Arts Commons (presenter and panelist)
· Joshua Dachs – Principle, Fisher Dachs Associates (presenter and panelist)
· Steven Wolff – Principle, AMS Planning (presenter and panelist)
· Kate Thompson- President and CEO, CMLC (panelist)

Register for Placemakers for your chance to learn more about ACT.

Have your say!
ACT is for you, and we want your input. Take the ACT 10-minute survey and help shape the future of the arts in Calgary. The more people that take part, the better a new Arts Commons will reflect the aspirations of Calgarians. Your feedback will be shared with the ACT design team to inform their work before the project execution gets underway. Plus, there’s a chance to win an Arts Commons prize package for two!

About ACT
ACT is a critical and exciting infrastructure project that will serve the needs of our growing city, have an immediate and long-term positive impact on our economy by jump-starting both short and long-term job creation and economic activity, and position Arts Commons and the resident companies for future sustainability.

Through ACT, an expanded and modernized Arts Commons will reflect Calgary's growth, provide spaces for all Calgarians to gather, build new opportunities for our resident companies to innovate, and continue attracting world-class talent to Calgary while giving local artists access to world-class venues. More importantly, we will be investing in our city's future by aligning ACT with Calgary’s and Alberta’s strategic objective of building a culturally vibrant and economically diverse community.
