ACQ - Zach Running Coyote

ACQ - Zach Running Coyote

Read time: Under two minutes

Earlier this month, Theatre Calgary announced their new Artistic Associate, Zach Running Coyote, made possible through the ROZSA Foundation IBPOC Arts Leaders Residency Grant.

We were able to sit down with Zach (virtually) to answer our Arts Commons Questionnaire (ACQ) in order to get to know Theatre Calgary’s newest star better.

Prior to joining Theatre Calgary as Artistic Associate, Zach was cast this past summer as Romeo in the Shakespeare by the Bow online presentation of Romeo & Juliet. His show Snowblind, was recently seen at Lunchbox Theatre, along with productions at Rosebud Theatre.

What’s your idea of perfect happiness?
My idea of perfect happiness is hanging out with Elders, learning stories and language. So stay home [and stay safe!] so we can gather again.

Which living person do you most admire?
The living person I most admire? I don't know, but the artist/leader I most admire, is Kim Senklip Harvey, who's podcast The Indigenous Cultural Evolutionist is one of my biggest inspirations as an emerging playwright and arts leader.

What do you consider the most overrated virtue?
The most overrated virtue is being easy to work with.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?
My greatest achievement? Haha I don't know, but I made a breakfast sandwich out of Eggo's once.

What is your most memorable arts experience?
As an audience member, Jani Lauzon's production of Almighty Voice and His Wife by Daniel David Moses at Soulpepper. As a performer, performing my solo show Snowblind last season at Lunchbox Theatre to an audience of Indigenous youth. Nothing comes close to performing for Indigenous youth.

Where is your favourite place to exhibit/perform?
My favourite place to perform is the Sunset Theatre in Wells BC. It's a super old movie theatre turned live theatre, where the playwright in me came to life. It's a mystical space.

Zach Running Coyote starred as Romeo alongside Anna Dalgleish as Juliet in Theatre Calgary’s Shakespeare on the Bow this past summer.

You have 2 hours of chill time, where do you go and what do you do?
If I have two hours of chill time I sit in the bath.

Where is your favourite YYC place to eat?
My favourite YYC place to eat is hands down Blue Star Diner.

What is your life motto?
I don't really do motto's but I do drink coffee in the bath.
