Hailed as “hysterically funny, brilliant, brutal” by Now Magazine, Beautiful Man makes its Alberta premiere in the Motel Theatre at Arts Commons. Written by the Hamilton-born Erin Shields who is known for her sharp lens interrogating the negative depictions of women in literature, Beautiful Man is a biting satire about the portrayal of women in film and television, co-produced by Downstage and Verb Theatre.
In 1975, in the heart of Venezuela, Maestro Jose Abreu initiated a groundbreaking program that would not only shape the lives of countless individuals but also revolutionize the approach to music education. This program, known as El Sistema, was designed to give kids a safe haven off of the streets, by providing them with the opportunity to learn music, play instruments, and cultivate their minds in multidisciplinary ways.

Growing up, art held a special place in my heart and began with my older sister. She's the one who kick-started my artistic journey, and it's sort of a ritual of ours that she insists I acknowledge her role. “Don't forget to tell people where it started,” she playfully reminds me before speaking or writing anything art-related. It's our little inside joke.
This past November, if you had ventured into the Engineered Air Theatre, tucked away in the lower levels of Arts Commons, you would have encountered something special. Under the simple name of Wakefield Brewster Presents, Pt. 1, Calgary’s Poet Laureate went about creating artistic collaboration on stage with some of Calgary’s most exciting interdisciplinary artists. Patrons walked away from this first presentation of the TD Amplify season saying that “the show was beyond expectations” and featured an “outstanding selection of new artists” even going as far to say that they’d “love to see more creations like this in Calgary.”
The Calgary Civic Symphony has entertained Calgarians for almost 50 years and every year we present a Holidays concert of orchestral music with seasonal favourites. We continue the tradition this year on Sunday December 10 at 2:30 PM with Holidays with the Heebee-Jeebees.
In a world where cultures blend, the combination of art and food becomes a strong way to share stories, honor diversity, and connect with others. When creative cooking meets the warmth of homemade meals, it fulfills our human need to bond, exchange tales, and find joy in simple pleasures. This merging isn't just on canvases or in galleries; it's also on our plates, broadening our view of the world and uniting different communities.
