All in Arts Commons Presents
Did you know that there's a mathematical reason that you love We Will Rock You and that critics originally wrote Queen off as dinosaurs who would never make it big? We can’t wait for Classic Albums Live to bring Queen: News of the World to the Jack Singer Concert Hall this February, so it’s time for another five fun facts that you might not know about one of the most applauded rock bands of all time.
Theatre Calgary’s A Christmas Carol marks it’s 36th season of delighting young and old with the classic tale of Ebeneezer Scrooge and his path to rediscovering the importance of kindness. It has certainly come a long way since its humble beginnings in 1983 at the old QR Centre. Boasting an immersive set made up of four houses weighing 3,000 lbs. each, a cast of 20 actors clothed in over 1,000 costume pieces, supported by 17 crew members, it’s no small theatrical undertaking.
It's the time of year when trees start to glow, the mountains turn white, and we take time to reflect on another year at Arts Commons. From captivating performances to inspiring exhibitions, this year has been filled with creativity, community, and connection. Join us as we reflect on 12 highlights that made the 2022-23 season at Arts Commons truly unforgettable.
Singer, songwriter, author, and beloved Canadian icon, Jann Arden has done it all. Starred in her own television show, taken home multiple JUNO Awards, and even secured a spot on Globe and Mail’s bestseller list. What you might not know about her is that she loves Christmas – a lot.
If you were to share your favourite holiday tradition, what would it be? It could be making a wish on the turkey wishbone or leaving cookies out for Santa, or maybe even taking an icy plunge into a frozen Canadian lake on Christmas Day. Maybe it was something as simple as putting on the cassette tape or CD of The Barra MacNeils’s The Christmas Album.
Poet Laureate Wakefield Brewster is not a fresh face in the artistic community. Since moving to Calgary 18 years ago, he has been racking up awards and recognition for his outstanding spoken word and poetry pieces and has had no desire to move to the traditional artistic epicentres of Canada, like Toronto or Montreal: “I couldn’t have done this anywhere else,” he says, “there is something very special about Calgary.” And now, as Arts Commons’ newest Incubator Fellow, Wakefield aims to encourage Calgary’s budding artists to grow where they are planted.
Cozy up with Arts Commons Presents this holiday season with the best hits of the season featuring East Coast sensation The Barra MacNeils and Calgary's own Jann Arden. It's the perfect way share a love of Canadian music at this festive time of year.
