Combining the talents of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Theatre Calgary, and Arts Commons, Ragtime: A Concert Performance is set to be a collaboration of historic proportions. But for those of us as yet unfamiliar with theatre terms and lingo, what, exactly, is a 'concert performance?'
Comprised of a dozen musicians with fan bases worldwide, Pink Martini is more than just a jazz band. With pianist Thomas Lauderdale at the helm and vocal sensation China Forbes leading the charge, the band knows how to turn a stage into a universal experience. Here are a few fun facts about the band before they join us at Arts Commons on May 19th.
On April 28, 2022, something very special will happen in the Jack Singer Concert Hall. For the first time ever, Arts Commons and JazzYYC come together to form the Canadian National Jazz Orchestra, welcoming members from across the country to represent the best in live jazz orchestral performance.
With original compositions reflecting the theme Stories of Canada, we wanted to hear directly from a few of the performers about why they're excited to be involved in the project and how they feel it will influence the future of jazz music in Canada. Their answers are filled with excitement, hope, and inspiration for the next generation of Canadian jazz musicians.
April 28th, the Canadian National Jazz Orchestra will bring together musicians from across the country for their first performance, uniting leading Canadian talent for the first-ever collaboration of this scope and scale. To make it happen, Arts Commons Presents and JazzYYC teamed up and brought the long-time dream of Kodi Hutchinson, Artistic Producer of JazzYYC, to life.
In March, Theatre Calgary takes audience to Chinquapin Parish, Lousiana, circa 1987. It’s here where we find Truvy’s Beauty Salon, where all the ladies who are “anybody” come to gossip and have their hair done by Truvy with Steel Magnolias.

As friends gather, inevitably, they end up in the kitchen – casual and joyous gatherings, surrounded by food, drink, and music. Alberta Theatre Projects’ new show, Alberta Kitchen Party, calls upon these familiar and longed-for days - running March 2 - 19, 2022 at Arts Commons.
The Arts Commons Transformation (ACT) is poised to begin, marking a new era for Western Canada’s largest performing arts centre. The three project partners—Arts Commons, The City of Calgary and Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC)—are working in concert to realize this landmark transformation, the most significant arts facility development currently underway in Canada.
Something monumental is coming this June for Calgary arts fans - Arts Commons, the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, and Theatre Calgary are coming together for an unprecedented creative collaboration. In three performances, Ragtime: A Concert Presentation will merge the songs of the smash-hit Broadway musical with the renowned acoustics of the Jack Singer Concert Hall on June 11 & 12, 2022.
