A Glimpse Behind the Curtain with Alberta Theatre Projects’ The Wizard of Oz

This December, Alberta Theatre Projects embarks on the first event of their reimagined 2020-2021 season with a virtual behind-the-scenes glimpse into the workshopping process of a new play. This livestream reading of The Wizard of Oz, adapted by Andrew Scanlon, will take place live on the Martha Cohen Theatre stage as actors read through its draft format.

This Feels So Real video series asks artists to turn their creative eye and ability towards this new world we live in and distill the big ideas and problems we’re now facing into something human-sized and understandable.

Born in Mexico and educated in architecture and design, Silvia Temis discovered flamenco dance and later singing (cante) while designing sets for flamenco shows. Now, Silvia is based in Calgary and after training in vocals with prominent flamenco singers, she is the lead singer of the award-winning quartet, Notas de 4.

Chantal Chagnon is a Cree Ojibwe Métis singer, drummer, artist, storyteller, actor, educator, workshop facilitator, social justice advocate, and activist with roots in Muskeg Lake Cree Nation, Saskatchewan.

She shares traditional Indigenous songs, stories, culture, history, arts, crafts and teachings and has worked with Arts Commons to share a love of traditional drumming, drum-making, and storytelling. She has also introduced young people to Indigenous culture through her work as an educator.

For this Halloween season, Chantal shares her insight on costumes and how you can thoughtfully select your Halloween costume from a place of cultural understanding and empathy.

Deer Woman Worldwide

Deer Woman’s first public audience was the reading at Native Earth’s Weesageechak festival in November 2017. After four days of development we had a showing. We experimented with blocking and video design. The primarily Indigenous crowd was silent when we concluded, and Cherish recalls feeling worried. The first sound to explode from our people was not applause, but a loud sob from one woman, followed by resounding cheers.

Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra: Assistant Concertmaster Donovan Seidle brings music to isolation

Shortly after COVID-19 shut down stages across the country, musicians from the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and Edmonton Symphony Orchestra recorded a virtual performance that went viral, reaching more than 70,000 combined viewers on YouTube and Facebook.

The project was spearheaded by Calgary Phil Assistant Concertmaster Donovan Seidle.
